WHAT TO DO ?

  SNORKELING

Snorkelers can swim about 150 feet from shore and find coral reefs and delightful opportunities for feeding fish and taking underwater photos. There are usually several dive boats in the same vicinity, so everybody is aware of the presence of divers and snorkelers. The water is very calm in most areas, with only a couple of tricky currents, and it is crystal clear on most days.
Moderate amount of fish near the coral reef makes for decent underwater photo opportunities. You can see flounder, parrot fish, grouper, porcupine and dozens of other varieties.
You can easily snorkel from the beach to the reefs. Taking a tour allows you to reach reefs further out and to focus on having a good time in the water, as your valuables are guarded.



EXCURSIONS

Sosua is close enough to Puerto Plata to enjoy all its attractions. Visit the Amber Museum, take the cable car ride up to the Botanical Gardens atop Isabela de Torres Mountain. Take a tour of the rum factory with free samples and an option to buy quality rum. Spend the morning at the Columbus Water Park with its many slides and pools. Spend the afternoon at the Go Kart/Bumper Car park that is open all night. These two parks are just a 15-minute drive from Sosua.
North Coast excursions include safari-style jeep trips into the countryside, catamaran day trips off Sosua Beach, horseback riding excursions into the outback, trips to Cabarete and La Isabela Park off Luperón (where the first European settlement in the New World was built in the 15th Century), Cofresí Beach, and the Puerto Plata city tour (may or may not include the cable car ride).

 GOLF

The Dominican Republic is one of the premier golf destinations in the Caribbean. The North Coast is home to 2 Robert Trent Jones Sr. courses: challenging Playa Dorada, and breathtaking Playa Grande, both 18 holes.



MOUNTAIN BIKING

Half or full day adventure through the interior of the Dominican Republic. A 3000 feet-downhill ride on winding mountain roads (with support vehicle). Exhilarating fun for all levels of athletes. NATIONAL PARK EL CHOCO HIKE

Check out one of the newest national parks in the country; an incredible 77 square miles of jungle, lagoon, caves, forest, and open backcountry. An educational nature hike for all levels.



27 WATERFALLS OF DAMAJAGUA CASCADE HIKE

Behind the sugar cane fields of Puerto Plata and into the hills for an intense climb up the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua. A labyrinth of tunnels, caves and natural pools leads us through a virtual fairytale land of beauty. Sliding and jumping down is as much fun. Although this is a non-technical climb, it is physically demanding. Swimmers only please. For athletic beginners/hikers.


SNORKELING AND SCUBA DIVING

WHALE WATCHING

85% of the humpback whales of the North West Atlantic are born in Dominican waters, where they return every winter to breed and give birth. The humpback whale is an endangered species, for there are only about 6,000 of them left in the entire world.   ( Whales watching )



OCEAN WORLD PUERTO-PLATA

Centrally located in the Caribbean on the North Shore of the Dominican Republic in Cofresi, just three miles west of Puerto Plata, Ocean World Marina and Casino are the newest additions to a US$100-million dollar complex that also includes Ocean World Adventure Park.
